Spring on-time performance hits records!
06.06.09

British Virtual Airways pilots have produced the best punctual performance for 5 years in the months of March, April and May. The quarter had an overall operational performance of 84%. That means 84 flights in 100 have departed either on time or early (shown as months 13/14/15 on the graphic). This is against a target of 72% and an overall figure of 68% for the year 2008.

These results are fantastic and prove that our new recruits take their position seriously. Reading through the reports, it seems there is a clear drive to achieve great performance and a better overall understanding of our operation's procedures.

Said Charlie Smith, Fleet director and scheduler. Spring is usual the best performing quarter for on time performance, whilst autumn is the poorest (autumn 2006 recorded a poor 38% on time performance, our worst in history, mainly due to stormy and windy conditions). If the weather holds, we expect to be able to beat the 72% target throughout the summer.

FSX Boeing 757-200 model out by this week-end!
02.04.09

We are excited to bring you a new model for Flight Simulator X. The Boeing 757-200 has been flying in BVAir.com colour for over 7 years, but so far was only available for FS9. We have been working on a replacement model for FSX and we are pleased to announce the release of the FSX757. The aircraft will be available for download by this week-end. Our beta testers are currently finishing the testing of the aircraft.

The Boeing 757-200 will remain in the British Virtual Airways fleet for a while longer, despite the fact that British Airways announced today that it will sell its remaining 10 757s to a cargo operator from 2010, replacing the older jets by more fuel efficient Airbus 320s.

The new model features all the usual functionalities such as reflective body, fully animated parts, new camera angles and night lighting. For the first time, the jet features the London 2012 official logo near the tail. As always, your feedback on the new model will be welcomed. We are now starting work on finding a new Boeing 767-300 model for FSX.

UPDATE 03.04.09: Now available to download. The file includes specific sound files and totals 33MB of data. See your download link from the main pilot's screen to proceed.

Flight selection and report queries
25.03.09

Several emails and forum posts from pilots are reporting a technical problem with flight selection and reporting. The problem seems to occur on a random basis when the user selects a flight and doesn't report it before midnight the same day. The following day, the user may be faced with a dilemma: trying to report the flight from the previous day and being told that "no flight is booked" or trying to select a flight and being told "Please report your previous flight before selecting a new one". This is not a problem we have experienced before, and may be due to some of the deep rooted changes that have been completed for the re-launch.

Whilst we are look into the issue, we would like to ask pilots to email us at support@bvair.com if and as soon as they experience this problem so we can investigate it on the spot. In the meantime, please keep the following procedure in mind: it is preferable to select and fly a flight on the same day to prevent conflicts between the British Virtual Airways flight server and your account. If you are faced with the scenario mentioned above, try and select the same flight again (if you selected BVA101 on day 1, select BVA101 on day 2, if you can) and report the flight right after the selection. You can always delete the report after that, which should reset the flight allocation system for your account.

UPDATE 26.03.09: If you experience this problem, as an interim measure, simply log out and back into your account. We are now working on a patch to fix this issue.
UPDATE 01.04.09: This issue should now be fixed, if you are still experiencing problems, please email us.

Welcome to the new BVAir.com!

27.02.09

Following 12 months of work, we are proud and excited to bring you the new look BVAir.com!

Project Azur involved the core registered users helping our team to find out what people wanted to see removed and redesigned; what functions to introduce and the general look and feel of BVAir.com.

Navigation has also been simplified to the extreme and all areas of the website can now be accessed directly from the new menu bar, all with a single click!

Today, and coinciding with the 10 year anniversary of British Virtual Airways, we unveil the result. In terms of design, the new look is based on a streamlined, crisper and leaner look, with a simple colour palette that reflects the Britishness of the airline. The warm beige background is easy on the eye, and the white and bold red create a fresh feel. The menu bar is designed in pure black and compliments the new random logo images. The typefaces have been restricted to just two: Calibri for general text, and of course Mylius for the corporate imaging. Navigation has also been simplified to the extreme and all areas of the website can now be accessed directly from the new menu bar, all with a single click!

We followed users feedback and have added a convenient login panel within the home page. The operational snapshot is also shown to the left of the home page, allowing pilots to quickly glance at the current state of the airline's activities. The page is also much quicker to load up, with the page you're reading now weighing in at under 100Kb! This new design is still under development and you will notice continued improvements, especially in pages past the login section in the coming weeks. We believe we now have one of the best website of any virtual airlines. With recruitment scheduled to re-open next week, we start 2009 with renewed confidence. Let us know what you think of the changes, we look forward to your feedback (contact us link is at the bottom of this page).

Microsoft grounds Flight Simulator development
20.02.09

The future of Microsoft's long running Flight Simulator series has been cast into doubt, after the software maker US laid-off the entire development team.Microsoft says it is "committed" to the series, despite shutting the Aces studio when it cut 5000 jobs.

But third party developers say Microsoft needs to outline its plans for the game in more detail. MS Flight Simulator is arguably the longest running computer game series ever, first launched back in 1982. Nels Anderson, founder of enthusiast website FlightSim.com said the studio closure was a "dark day" for the flight sim market.

Microsoft have apparently cancelled a 27 year franchise. Flight sims were one of the few things about Microsoft people actually liked. It made them money and had an enormous following. To cancel something like that is an amazing thing to do," he said.

Just Flight's director, Dermot Stapleton, which publishes third party add-ons for MS Flight Simulator, said that as Microsoft had only announced the studio closure, people would have to draw their own conclusions as to what future plans the firm had in store for the game.

"It's the end of the line for their in-house development studio, but that doesn't mean it's the end of the line for the game."All Microsoft did was name a group of developers working on the game Aces Studio and now, as they've laid them and a load of other developers off, they have been somewhat hoisted on their own petard. "My guess is that Microsoft will now licence the code to a third party developer and then cross that "cash bridge" when they come to it."

Microsoft FSX, 2 years on

07.07.08

FSX will have been with us for 2 years this Fall. When Microsoft first talked about the upcoming upgrade to the game, the flight simulation community, and BVAir, were all very excited. Yet, two years on, the excitement has long gone, and I, like many of our pilots, am disappointed with the offering from FSX. Every week, we get emails from our registered pilots and visitors asking us to keep FS2004 support going. We are, and we will!

Whilst FSX has taken the visuals and realism to the next level, it still has many flaws. One of them being the poor performance of the simulator in its maximum settings.

"Even with the latest PC equipment, the game struggles with traffic and rendering."

We approached Microsoft a while back about this, and we were promised that SP1 of Windows Vista would help. It did, but I'm afraid, too little, too late. The development of third party software and freeware for FSX has also been amazingly slow, when compared to FS2002 and FS2004 releases. To date, some of BVAir.com fleet is still unavailable for FSX due to the lack of developers working on the simulator.

We know that Microsoft is already working on the next version of Flight Simulator, let us hope this upgrade will be worth the wait! In the meantime, rest assure that we will maintain our FS2004 support, as well as looking for opportunities to develop our FSX offering further.

VAT-SPY RELEASED FROM VATSIM
05 MAY
VATSIM, the Virtual Air Traffic Simulation has released VAT-Spy, a traffic and ATC viewer application exclusively for the VATSIM network. VAT-Spy was developed by Ross Carlson, an ATC radar simulator for VATSIM. VAT-Spy was closely modelled after ServInfo, a popular traffic and ATC viewer for multiple online flying networks. This program will allow you to view live traffic and controller's coverage in the VATSIM environment, including fellow BVAir pilots. To find out more about this new application, view screenshots and download the free program, visit http://www.metacraft.com/VATSpy/

PHOTO OF THE WEEK SETUP MODIFIED
02 MAY
We have taken the decision to modify the "photo of the week" setup in order to make it more open to everyone, and more adaptable to change. Instead of being a process of submitting a photo, all pilots can now freely upload their own snapshots onto the "photo gallery" part of the forum. From there, we will be picking the best shots (up to 52 per year) and starting the voting from the forum itself. To be in with a chance to win, get posting! Please remember that submitted entries must now contain any drawing software modifications (no added effects or modifications from Photoshop etc.) in order to be considered for the competition.

NEW COCKPIT FOR FSX AIRBUS 380
01 MAY
We are pleased to announce the release of a new cockpit for the Airbus A380-800 for Flight Simulator X. The updated models is a leap forward on the previous offering, which was directly taken from the built-in Boeing 747-400 simulator. The new file is now available for download from your login screen then download library.

CONCORDE RETIRED
18 MARCH
After careful consideration and debate, we have decided to retire Concorde of the BVAir.com fleet. The decision was not taken lightly, but had to reflect the fact that the aircraft is the most under-utilised in the fleet (averaging one sector per week for the last six months) and it is proving difficult to find an acceptable aircraft model for FSX. The schedules and timetables have been updated and the supersonic services (flight number 001-004) have been discontinued. Concorde was in the British Virtual Airways fleet since 1999 when pilots had to pass an online test to be allowed to fly it. In 2003 the aircraft became available to all pilots, and in 2006, we re-designed the installation process for Concorde, due to its complex series of updates. Concorde will be missed by a lot of our pilots, but we hope we can celebrate the amazing adventure Concorde has been, both online and for British Airways.

HEAVY SNOW FORECAST FOR EUROPE
09 JANUARY
The coming weeks are likely to see our on-time performance slip as snow and high winds batter Western Europe. In the UK, snow is expected to fall in Scotland, the Midlands are the South today, up to 2 inches, although most of it should be cleared by the end of the week. Heavy snow has already covered most of central Europe and we are 3 points below our target for punctuality. Congestion is also more likely, especially at Heathrow where un-experienced pilots struggle with high winds and poor visibility.

NEW REPORT EDITING FACILITY NOW LIVE
03 JANUARY
Following pilot's feedback, we're pleased to announce that we have implemented a report editing facility on all pilot's logbook. From today, any report entries can be edited from the logbook page. This function will allow pilots to correct typos and invalid entries themselves rather than having to email us in order to action the modification. All reports can be changed within 4 weeks of submission. Look out for more improvements in reporting procedures in the coming weeks.

Website review
11 OCT
BVAir.com's tester Carl Howard has recently been auditing parts of the website for serviceability. All in all, over 15 errors were found, such as broken links, missing images and videos. We are thankful for Carl's testing work which means BVAir.com is now more robust and up to date. Amongst other corrections, all videos are now properly linked from the fleet page (including the previously missing A340/A320/B738/E120).

Auditions for Flight Training's voices!
10 OCT
British Virtual Airways wants to hear from you... Literally! We are looking for 3-4 volunteers to act as our voice over for the upcoming Flight Training facility. We are developing an online guide to flying with us, and are looking for pilots with a clear and articulate voice, speaking fluently English, to act as readers for the spoken parts of the guide. In order to apply, you will need to send us an audio file (MP3 format) of you, reading the audition text. You will need a microphone, and if you do not have a way to send an MP3, please click here to download a free tool. To be in with a chance, you must send your recording by November 1st 2007. Good luck!

BA orders B787s and A380s
01 OCT
British Airways is following BVAir.com's lead (!) by ordering 24x Boeing 787 (-8 and -9) with a further 18 on option and also 12x Airbus 380-800s with a further 7 on option. British Virtual Airways has been flying the A380 and B787 since 2006. Deliveries will start in 2010 for the B787 and 2012 for the A380. Both aircraft will be powered by Rolls Royce engines Trent 900 on the A380 and Trent 1000 on the B787. It is the first time that Airbus has won a contract to operate BA's prestigious long haul network.

VATSIM milestone achievement
10 SEP
Today, collectively, pilots flying online on the Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network (VATSIM) have flown 10 million hours! VATSIM started in 2001 and is the most popular online flying tool available today. It allows pilots to fly online with other pilots on their screen and with real (against computer generated) air traffic instructions where available. If you haven't already done so, why not register with VATSIM for free and join over 100,000 pilots on the network. Visit www.vatsim.net to find out more.

Recruitment re-opens
03 SEP
We are pleased to be able to accept new pilots once more. Since 1600GMT, the recruitment pages have been re-activated and we can now take on new pilots. Please click on "recruitment" and "register now" to proceed. Silver online registration is the only option available to new pilots, as we are still working on the upcoming release of the Gold membership offering. As of today, we can accept up to 349 new recruit with the current flight schedule across all fleet. We look forward to welcoming new entrants to BVAir.com.

It will be released in the first quarter of 2008 and this is the official press release: "Flight Simulator X: Acceleration Expansion Pack" is the action-filled expansion pack for Microsoft Corp.'s amazingly successful and award-winning "Flight Simulator X" video game. With "Flight Simulator X: Acceleration Expansion Pack" gamers of all ages, types and skill levels can race against friends in amazing, highly detailed locations around the world, test their skills and heroism in many new missions, fly three exciting new aircraft, and share rewards, photos and videos with friends and the broader flight community.

vRoute guide and download now online
19 JUL
Following a forum poll, vRoute is now officially teamed up with British Virtual Airways. vRoute is a free application that can be downloaded and used to fly on VATSIM with ease. This program combines the VATSIM server information (known as servinfo), the world's largest flight plan database (more than 45,000 routes as of today), and a straight forward flight and ATC booking features. It works seamlessly with Microsoft's FS2004, FSX and SquawkBox 3. VRoute can also be used to fly off-line, as the program integrates flight plan exportation, weather forecast, statistic for any given route etc. The download is available from your download menu, and a guide, created especially for us, is available in the help files.

New flight plans for FSX!
11 JUL
After a lot of work, we are pleased to release a brand new set of flight plans, specifically designed for Microsoft Flight Simulator 10 (X). Almost 300 new flight plans have been created from scratch using FSX's interface. New gate assignments will now be shown in your Flight Briefings, in brackets. Due to some incompatibility between FS9 and FSX, some gates allocations were not recognised by the new simulator. This new set of flight plans corrects all these gates, plus some other routing differences and errors. The departure gate on briefing will now show FS9 and FSX ie.: E5 (326 FSX). If you use FSX, we urge you to download the new file as soon as possible (installation instructions are included). We are now starting work on an updated FS9 flight plan download.

Technical problems - SOLVED
04 JUL
We thank you for your patience. All systems are now go. At present, we have stopped new registrations from taking place to concentrate on the operational side of the website. All registered pilots have been credited with one week additional time on their registration and we will now start answering the backlog of emails we have in our inbox. Apologies for this technical bug.

New pricing for registration
15 JUN
Today, we have changed our pricing structure for new registrations. The standard registration is now calculated in UK Pounds as opposed to US Dollars. This move will protect our revenues against the falling US currency. It also makes more sense as over 80% of our new pilots are UK based, paying with UK credit or debit cards. The Silver registration is just £10 per year. The Gold registration remains unavailable, although we hope to bring back this option by the end of the year. We have recently had a surge in new registrations and this new pricing structure will save UK pilots the US conversion rate.

Microsoft release first FSX patch
18 MAY
Microsoft has released the first patch for Flight Simulator X. The service pack includes fixes for several problems, including multicore processor support, activation and installation, third-party add-ons, and more. To download, click here

Exciting new opportunity within the team
09 MAY
Following the departure of Sarb from our testers team, we have an exciting position of tester available at BVAir.com. As a tester, you will be contacted by us every so often, and requested to evaluate a new aircraft model, flight plan or beta part of the website, and give us a full report promptly. It is a rare chance to join the team as a tester, and the last position advertised (in 2004) was filled within just 48 hours. Please see the job specification under "recruitment" and "other jobs" and apply online if you qualify.
